What is Sihr?

Sihr is denoted from the meaning either hidden or secret, therefore often sahirs deal in secrecy which enables them to draw closer to the shaytan. The term magic is utilised between both the sahir and shayateen to seek help from each other by means of creating problems within society which is the essence of sihr. Sihr permits something to appear i.e. illusions, deception to confuse people and deceive their eyes, by means of making the false appear to be the truth. The evidence is as Allah (swt) says (interpretation of the meaning) “They said: ‘O Moosa! Either you throw first or we be the first to throw?’ (Quran, 20: 65). Musa said ‘Nay, throw you (first)!’ Then behold! their ropes and their sticks, by their magic, appeared to him as though they moved fast (Quran 20:66). Allah (swt) knows best.

What is mass?

The Arabic word Jinn means “hidden from sight” taken from the Arabic root word jann i.e. to hide or hidden. The jinn are a creation of Allah (swt) made from smokeless fire, and have free will as humans do to differentiate right from wrong. It is evident a Jinn may possess a human according to the consensus of the Imams of Ahl al-Sunnah wa’l-Jama’ah as Allah (swt) says (interpretation of the meaning): “Those who eat riba [usury] will not stand (on the Day of Resurrection) except like the standing of a person beaten by shaytan leading him to insanity.” (Quran, 2:275). Jinn possession is often referred to a type of sickness hence in Arabic the word mass (possession) is used to refer to Junoon (insanity). A jinn may possess a human based on several reasons with the vast majority through sihr and al ayn. However, it is necessary for the afflicted person to seek closeness to Allah (swt) by means which is prescribed in the Shariah and abstain from that which is not from the deen. Allah (swt) knows best.

What is ayn?

Al- ‘ayn is an Arabic word (translated as the evil eye) often referred to when an individual harms another with his/her eye. An example is when an individual may like a thing in which his/her feelings of hatred or jealousy affect an individual by their repeated looking at the object. The evidence is as Allah (swt) commands his Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) to seek refuge with him from the envier. (interpretation of the meaning) “And from the evil of the envier when he envies” (Quran, 113:5). However, it is necessary to understand any individual who imparts the evil eye on others is considered the “envious”, whereas not every envier can place the evil eye on one another and Allah (swt) knows best.

Allaah azza wa jal says: "The example of those who take allies other than Allah is like that of the spider who takes a home. And indeed, the weakest of homes is the home of the spider, if they only knew." [Al-'Ankabut: 41] Points of benefit taken from the verse: Allaah compares the weakest of homes (home of a spider) to the reality of shirk. Shirk itself is incredibly weak which is the Complete opposite to tawheed which Allaah describes in surah Baqarah as '...the most trustworthy handhold with no break in it...'[2:256] Homes are usually stronger than the habitant, but not for the case of the spider. Since the spider compared to other living creatures, is generally a weak creature and its home - the web is even weaker. The web refers to a system or network of help and the Spider mentioned in the ayah refers to the one who seeks help and relies upon other than Allaah. Mushriks as we know do this …

Ways to support your Ruqya

Yes. Ruqya is allowed and has been prescribed by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as long as it doesn't contain any form of Shirk at all.

The recitation of the Qur'an can never harm you as it is a "Healing and Mercy for the believers" as stated in Surat Al-Isra: Ayah 82

All afflictions come from Allah (SWT) and only he possesses the Knowledge of when it will be lifted. As Muslims, we must understand that afflictions are reasons for us to return back to Allah (SWT) and call upon him only.

Yes and many other things can be affected also. Please read the articles section for greater detail on the issue.

You may or may not be affected. There are certain signs and symptoms which give an indication as to whether you are afflicted. Please refer to the 'Self-Diagnosis' section on our website to assess your situation.

Generally you would not need to come back but it can depend on your circumstances. The Raqi should provide you with a programme to follow after your Ruqya session, but if things get complicated then you can return to the same Raqi or another to help you with your condition.
