Jinn and Devils (MASS)

Jinn and Devils (MASS)

Jinn in the Qur’an

"And the Jinn we created before from scorching fire." (Al-Hijr: 27)

O assembly of jinn and men! Did there not come to you Messengers from amongst you, relating to you My communications and warning you of the meeting of this day of yours? They shall say: We bear witness against ourselves; and this world’s life deceived them, and they shall bear witness against their own souls that they were unbelievers (Al-Anaam: 130)

And certainly We have created for hell many of the jinn and the men; they have hearts with which they do not understand, and they have eyes with which they do not see, and they have ears with which they do not hear; they are as cattle, nay, they are in worse errors; these are the heedless ones (Al-A'raf: 179)

And those who disbelieve will say: Our Lord! Show us those who led us astray from among the jinn and the men that we may trample them under our feet so that they may be of the lowest (Al-Fussilat: 29)

The Definition of Jinn

The word jinn, al jaan, al jinna occurs 29 times in the Qur’an.

Jinn in Arabic literally means “hidden from sight” and is derived from the Arabic root j’n’n (pronounced:jann-junn meaning “to hide” or “be hidden”. Other words derived from this root are majnun ‘mad’ (‘one whose intellect is hidden’), junuun ‘madness’, and janīn, ’embryo, fetus’ (‘hidden inside the womb’). Al Jawhari (the author of Al-Sihaah al hakeem; page 19) explains: “Al-jann is the father of the jinn, the plural of which is jeenaan”. All of that which is concealed from you is Junna‘anka (concealed from you). Janna al-layl means the darkness of the night. Al-jaan is the plural of Al-Jinn. Jannahu al-laylmeans the night covered him. The above is the root meaning of the word Jinn. This material above is extracted from the works of Ashibly and Al-jawhari. The grave and shroud is called jenanan because cover the dead

The heart is called jeenan because it concealed in the chest

The sprit is called jananan because the body conceals it.

Enmity towards the prophets

And thus we have made for every prophet an enemy, devils from mankind and jinn.

Prophets and messengers were sent calling them to tawheed

“O company of jinn and mankind, did there not come to you messengers from among you, relating to you my verses and warning you of the meeting of this day of yours?” They will say, “we bear witness against ourselves”; and the worldly life had deluded them, and they will bear witness against themselves that they were disbelievers (6:130).

Their weakness of bringing the like of the Qu'ran

Allah Says, “If mankind and the jinn gathered in order to produce the like of this Qur’an, they could not produce the like of it even if they were to each others assistants.(17:88) وعن صرف بعض الجن إلى النبي (ص) يستمعون القرآن، قوله تعالى: وَإِذْ صَرَفْنَا إِلَيْكَ نَفَرًا مِنَ الْجِنِّ يَسْتَمِعُونَ الْقُرْآنَ فَلَمَّا حَضَرُوهُ قَالُوا أَنْصِتُوا فَلَمَّا قُضِيَ وَلَّوْا إِلَى قَوْمِهِمْ مُنْذِرِينَ

Some jinn were directed to the Prophet. [mention, O Muhammad], when we directed to you a few of the jinn, listening to the Qur’an. And when they attended it, they said, “Listen quietly.” And when it was concluded, they went back to their people as Warner’s.

Quraish claimed Allah has Daughters:

And they have claimed between Him and the jinn a lineage, but the jinn have already known that they [who made such claims] will be brought to [punishment]. (37:158) In turn making jinn equal with Allah But they have attributed to Allah partners – the jinn, while He has created them – and have fabricated for Him sons and daughters without knowledge. Exalted is He and high above what they describe (6:100) Abu Bakar As-Siddique asked who’s their mother and they answered, Allah had a relation with the jinn. Allah says: He neither begets nor is born. (112:3) Those whom they invoke seek means of access to their Lord, [striving as to] which of them would be nearest, and they hope for His mercy and fear His punishment. Indeed, the punishment of your Lord is ever feared. (57:17)

Jinn around the world

All culture and religions believe in the world of the unseen in some form or another, believing that they are very tangible in their lives and having their own lists of names. For example, the 72 shayateen, equating them to the prophet Solomon, and giving them characteristics that ascribe to them a deity or a spirit of divine powers and control. Another example is Seth, the god of the Underworld from Ancient Egyptian ideology. Greek mythology is characterised by the belief in gods, and Jewish (Kabbala), Christian, Hindu and Buddhists beliefs are heavily influenced by the unseen world. Cultures across the world are also influenced by beliefs in the unseen including Africans, Asians to the Shinto of Japan, Philippine culture is exorbitant in its nature to blame demons for negative circumstances.

The other extreme are those people that want to ignore demons, denying their existence, burying their heads in the sand, or believing all the demons are on the other side of the world. The truth is demonic awareness and activity is increasing through the use of black magic and evil spells that are available in bookshops, on the Internet, and all over the world. There are demons in the atmosphere around us and we need to be aware of their activity. The Secret societies amongst them are Skull and Bones (of which president Bush belongs), Freemasons, Illuminati, Order of the Temple of the East, to name a few. The terms negative energy, devils, satan, darker falling angels or demon aliens, UFO’s, elves, fairies, mermaids, vampires, werewolves, monsters, call them what you want, they are concealed from your sight (Jinn in Arabic literally meaning “hidden from sight). The jinn are a spiritual entity that are under Allah’s control. Shaykh Al Islam Ibn Tayymiyah said: “All nations believe in the jinn, and they have many stories, which would take too long to tell. No one denies the existence of the jinn except a few small groups of ignorant philosophers and doctors and their ilk. As for the elite of the people, it is narrated that they either believed in the jinn or no opinion was narrated from them concerning the matter…” (Majmoo’ Al-Fatawaa 19/32

Reasons for possession

1. Revenge When a jinn possesses a human being for revenge, it is usually because the human has caused harm to it, or the jinn thinks the person has intentionally caused it harm. The ways in which a human can cause harm to the jinn When the jinn possess a human for revenge it usually due to one of the following reasons:

  • Pouring boiling water: Boiling water can cause harm to the jinn or even kill them. If a person for example pours boiling water in the bathroom or in the lavatory while cleaning, and does not say bismillah before they pour water, a jinn could be sleeping there, perhaps a baby, or a young jinn and they will be killed or harmed, and the family, or tribe of the jinn will want to take revenge.
  • Urinating in places where jinn reside: The jinn reside in places where human beings do not frequently visit, and tend to take control of these areas and make them their homes. For example, insect holes, caves or woodlands. If a jinn is sleeping or sitting with his family by a bush for example, and a human comes and urinates there, where the jinn resides, and he doesn’t say bismillah beforehand, the jinn can take control of him, since they feel that he has caused them harm, so the effect will be that they will cause him harm in return. I have personally seen this happen where a brother came to me, I read ruqya for him, and the jinn had explained that he had taken control of this person because of his actions in a park.
  • Harming animals that have jinn in them: Jinn can take the form of animals/Jinn can live in animals, particularly black animals, and so if a person harms an animal, particularly at night, these can be jinn and they can harm you back. Shaykh al-Islam, Ibn Taymiyyah, said: The jinn may appear in human and animal form, so they may appear as snakes and scorpions etc., or in the form of camels, cattle, sheep, horses, mules and donkeys, or in the form of birds, or in the form of humans, as the Shaytaan came to Quraysh in the form of Suraaqah ibn Maalik ibn Ju’sham when they wanted to set out for Badr. (Majmoo’ al-Fataawa, 19/44.) According to the Prophet ﷺ, if a snake enters your home, it may be a jinn, and so you must give it the time and option to leave, for 3 days and if it still refuses then kill it as it is Shaytaan. Avoid black cats and dogs. “…There are in Medina jinns who have accepted Islam, so when you see any one of them, pronounce a warning to it for three days, and if they appear before you after that, then kill it for that is a devil.” (Book #026, Hadith #5557)
  • Shouting out loud, wailing, singing or reciting Qur’an in the toilet: This is something I have had experience with. A brother who came to me for ruqya had been speaking to himself in the toilet. Slowly he went into conversation with the Shayateen, saying he was stronger than them, and that they couldn’t do anything to him. The Jinn possessed him, and he was to blame, because he was the one who told the jinn to present themselves.
  • Jumping from a high place without saying bismillah: If a person says bismillah before an act, the jinn can hear it, and they will not ignore it. Sometimes a characteristic of the jinn is that they are arrogant, so it doesn’t matter to them if they see you, they think you can see them, but deep down they know you cannot. In turn they let you harm them, nudge or touch them and then they will touch you back. That evening you will not sleep all night, tossing and turning until they have had enough, then they will go back to their family – if they don’t like to possess humans, they want to live freely in the wilderness, settle and travel the way they want to. Whereas there are some jinn that want to live a material life, and to be in a human and that’s when they enter them.
  • Throwing stones or objects in the wilderness without saying bismillah: If a person throws something it can hit and can harm the jinn. The person should always start with bismillah before he does this. Reading books on magic and calling upon the jinn to present themselves: This can cause harm. I have seen this happen. The person may get attacked and harmed, played with or possessed. This is the result of playing with Shaytaan, which is why it is forbidden for us to read these books. Spraying insect killer without saying bismillah: As mentioned jinn can take the form of insects and animals, and so if a person uses insect killer without saying bismillah they can kill the jinn.

2. Indirect Revenge This happens when a person is doing their Adhkaar, reciting Qur’an, staying away from haram to the best of their ability and is obedient to Allah azza wa jal, the jinn does not have anyway to attack the intended target, except through a those closest to him/her, for example the husband or wife etc.

3. One who turns away from the remembrance of Allah A jinn will oppress a human being woo is heedless of the remembrance of Allah swt. We have to remember the jinn are not without intelligence, they have intellect. They will plan and wait until a person is exposed or a member of the family is also exposed. A person must always be calling upon Allah swt to help and protect him/her, which is why the morning and even remembrance of Allah is so important as this does not render a person exposed to such vigilance on the part of the attacking jinn. And whoever is blinded from remembrance of the most merciful, we appoint for him a devil and he is to him a companion (43:36).

4. Lustful desire. Al Jinn al Ashiq is not a new expression or understanding. Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah said the possession of man by jinn can be out of sexual desire, evil notions, or even love just as it is with humans which is Fahsha’a, i.e. immorality and bad conduct which is forbidden, that is if the two have agreed on the act. However if only the jinn is doing this out of their will it is oppression. The one who is committing this crime must be informed of there actions and they will be judged according to Allah and His messenger’s laws which were sent for man and jinn. Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah said taking pleasure in something or someone is to get what they want from the person or thing as what they wish or desire. This falls under all types of pleasure. The jinn will bring thing for them to please man , an image or money, take revenge on someone through murder, and in return they require man to obey the jinn by making them do acts of shirk, such as sujood to the jinn or another object or taking pleasure in them. And [mention, O Muhammad], the Day when He will gather them together [and say], “O company of jinn, you have [misled] many of mankind.” And their allies among mankind will say, “Our Lord, some of us made use of others, and we have [now] reached our term, which you appointed for us.” He will say, “The Fire is your residence, wherein you will abide eternally, except for what Allah wills. Indeed, your Lord is Wise and Knowing.” http://ruqyainlondon.com/blog/jinn-ashiq

5. Sihr The jinn accompany the one who has been bewitched to accomplish his goal. A person who visits a Saahir can be possessed.

6. ‘Ayn A Shaytaan will enter a person body through the channel of the evil eye, from the nafs of the one who has given the eye. The Shaytaan will see this channel from the person who gives the evil eye, through jealousy or envy, and will enter the person’s body through this channel.

7. Zaar Zaar is a trance ceremony that uses drumming and dancing to cure an illness thought to be caused by a demon, it is prohibited by Islam as a pagan practice. The participants will form a circle and dance until they start losing control of their bodies and the jinn will enter them. Even if one is not taking part, but is present they can be possessed because they are not in a gathering of the remembrance of Allah azza wa jal, but a gathering of the remembrance of Shaytaan. In most places that are gatherings of Shaytaan, the possibility arises for a person to be possessed. I have had an experiences where patients have been raving, staying out late, listening to loud music, dancing, taking drugs and drinking alcohol and all types of Al Munkar and Al Fahsha’ will be there, and so this is a time when the Shayateen will be there and they will possess a human being. Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah said there is time that a person who has been possessed out of love, this type is less difficult as others, such as revenge by possession, or by pouring hot water or killing them without knowing, and this is the most difficult type of possession. What this means, Allahu Alim, is that the possession of a jinn who is taking a revenge is different to the one who possesses for love, they are not trying to kill them, they just want to be with them, even though they can cause them a lot of harm by making them ill, or not appear nice. These are tricks the jinn do so that the person is just theirs, but when it is revenge they are trying to kill the individual. And Allah knows best.

Treatment of a Patient with a Jinn Aashiq

The oppression of the jinn begins the moment the person starts to fight against the jinn’s desires. For example if the jinn desires to smoke, and the person who never smokes begins smoking, or the person begins to watch inappropriate materials on TV or the internet,as soon as the person questions what they are doing and tries to stop doing what is wrong, the jinn will try to punish them. During the ruqyah, the jinn will usually speak and say that they love the person they have possessed, and refuse to leave the person. This is typical behaviour of a lustful jinn. It is very important for a raaqi to pay very close attention to what type of jinn they are dealing with, while he is reciting on someone in such a state, because there are different types of jinn and they have different strengths and characteristics, for example the afreet jinn will not speak at all, while others will speak straight away.

Shaykh Islam Ibn Taymiyyah said in ‘Majmu al Fatawah’, if the reason of possession is through fawahish – all form sexual desires and disobedience to Allah azza wa jal – touching, seeing, walking towards, to have evil intent concerning sexual desires – it is very important for the raaqi to tell the jinn that this is haraam, and Allah azza wa jal has made this haraam on mankind and jinn. The raaqi is then to deal with them appropriately according to the Qur’an and Sunnah. When the raaqi is trying to convince the jinn to leave the body, the jinn often refuses, although sometimes they may become Muslim yet still stay with them. Some will not become Muslim because they know that if they become Muslim they will have to obey the commands of Allah and his messenger which in turn will mean they will have to leave and stop being with them sexually, as this is a form of oppression. It is very difficult to help someone who is far away from Allah (swt), since they are confused can start fantasising and believe that they are in a romantic story, and are not aware of the reality of life.

Ways to take precaution to stop a jinn having sexual intercourse with the patient

  • Use Musk al Aswad, or olive oil that has been recited up on the private areas of the patient, every night before they go to sleep;
  • Use good scents on their clothing, e.g. Musk al Aswad or Musk al Abyad;
  • Sleep in clothing that covers the entire body, i.e. to the wrists and ankles;
  • When undressing to say bismillah la illah ila hu. While removing clothing recite ‘Bismillah” as the devil gets blinded and can’t look at the private parts due to this. Another hadith reports that one should say bismillah la ila ha illahu; At-Tirmithi 2/505, among others. See ‘Irwa’ul Ghalil no. 49 and Sahihul-Jami’ 3/203 O children of Adam, let not Satan tempt you as he removed your parents from Paradise, stripping them of their clothing to show them their private parts. Indeed, he sees you, he and his tribe, from where you do not see them. Indeed, We have made the devils allies to those who do not believe. (Surah A’raf: 27);
  • To recite the morning and evening Adhkaar;
  • To pray on time;
  • The patient should not sleep alone;
  • The patient should seek refuge and protection in Allah from the Shaytaan and sincerely believe;

Allah to be sufficient for them. It is important not to confuse the jinn with Shaytaan, Iblees, who lives on the sea. His troops and followers are the ones who are widespread over the earth. The jinn are everywhere, in the market places, in the homes, in the bathrooms etc. Anas ibn Maalik narrated that when the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) ate, he would lick his three fingers, “And he said, ‘If any one of you drops a piece of food, let him remove any dirt from it and eat it, and not leave it for the Shaytaan.’ And he commanded us to clean the plate, and said, ‘For you do not know where in your food the blessing is.’” (Narrated by Muslim, 2034).

Sexual intercourse between human and jinn Sexual intercourse between a human and a jinn can happen in one of the following ways

  • The person has a wet dream;
  • Masturbation;
  • Seeing a form who they will sleep with, with this they can have children;
  • A person doesn’t have a wet dream, but feels as though someone is having sexual intercourse with them;

The jinn will come to a man or woman in the image they desire, and by doing so will take pleasure by fulfilling their sexual desire. The marriage of jinn and humans Shaykh Islam Ibn Taymiyyah says in ‘Majmu’ al Fatawa’ – if a human being loves a jinn and there is a mutual agreement they can have children. This is something that is well known. Bilqis, the Queen of Saba, one of her fathers were from the jinn. This can be found in Luq Al marjaan.

On occasion the jinn will say that they want to marry the person they are in love with, in which case it is vital to show the jinn that this concept is absurd since the person cannot see the jinn that is asking for marriage. Even if they were to take a form where the person could see them, it is still forbidden. The evidence is in the Qur’aan, where Allah (swt) says; “And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquillity in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought”. (Surah Ar Rum: 21)

Allah (swt) says here that He created from ‘yourselves’ i.e. for jinn from themselves, and from human from themselves. Therefore a relationship between mankind and jinn would not be from themselves. The jinn should be informed that if they were to leave something for the sake of Allah azza wa jal, He (swt) will give them something better. For example, Allah (swt) will reward the believers with Hoor al ‘Ayn in Jannah. Most of the cases of jinn possession are due to lustful desire. A person who has been desired does not have to be beautiful.

Types of jinn

“The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: ‘The jinn are of three types: a types that has wings, and they fly through the air; a type that looks like snakes and dogs; and a type that stops for a rest then resumes its journey.” (reported by al-Tahhaawi in Mushkil al-Athaar, 4/95, and by al-Tabaraani in al-Kabeer, 22/214. Shaykh al-Albaani said in al-Mishkaat (2/1206, no. 4148): al-Tahhaawi and Abu’l-Shaykh reported it with a saheehisnaad).

Form this three types of jinns they are pious rebellious, mareed, maarid, Afreet, Allah mentions them in the Quran.

And as protection against every (maarid),rebellious devil Surat Aş-Şāffāt 37:7

And of the people is he who disputes about Allah without knowledge and follows every (mareed) rebellious devil.Surat Al-Ĥaj 23:3

A (Afreet) powerful one from among the jinn said, “I will bring it to you before you rise from your place, and indeed, I am for this [task] strong and trustworthy.” Surat An-Naml (The Ant) – 27: 39

From them that fly like mentioned in the above hadeeth and those who dive and swim as Allah mentioned in the Quran

He devils [of jinn] – every builder and diver Surat Şād (The Letter “Saad”) 38:37

They have the ability to think and reflect. Similarly, to man they also have the ability to choose between the path of good and the path of evil in the same manner as humans The jinn have their own sect and groups of Muslim, sunny, shear, suufy, Jews, Zionist, Christians, Catholics, Masson, Buddhist, Hindu, Sun, sea, mountains, stones, moon, fire worshipers…etc

Allah clearly states in Quran that He is the Creator of man and jinns, he is the most wise and the only one worth of warship.

And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me. Surat Adh-Dhāriyāt 51:56

I do not want from them any provision, nor do I want them to feed Me.

Allah Says about the jinn speaking about their faith: And among us are the righteous, and among us are [others] not so; we were [of] divided ways. Surat Al-Jinn 72:11 And among us are Muslims [in submission to Allah], and among us are the unjust. And whoever has become Muslim – those have sought out the right course.

Skill of the jinn

From them who are intelligent,clever and smart they have intellect, and who have reason and wit about them and amongst them are those who are heedless.

And We have certainly created for Hell many of the jinn and mankind. They have hearts with which they do not understand, they have eyes with which they do not see, and they have ears with which they do not hear. Those are like livestock; rather, they are more astray. It is they who are the heedless.Surat Al A raf 7:179

They can build buildings and make things as Allah says: يَعْمَلُونَ لَهُ مَا يَشَاءُ مِن مَّحَارِيبَ وَتَمَاثِيلَ وَجِفَانٍ كَالْجَوَابِ وَقُدُورٍ رَّاسِيَاتٍ ۚ اعْمَلُوا آلَ دَاوُودَ شُكْرًا ۚ وَقَلِيلٌ مِّنْ عِبَادِيَ الشَّكُورُ

They made for him what he willed of elevated chambers, statues, bowls like reservoirs, and stationary kettles. [We said], “Work, O family of David, in gratitude.” And few of My servants are grateful. Surat Saba 34:13 They have their own society tribes kingdoms, works, slaves, rulers, soldiers:

وَمَا مِن دَابَّةٍ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَا طَائِرٍ يَطِيرُ بِجَنَاحَيْهِ إِلَّا أُمَمٌ أَمْثَالُكُم ۚ مَّا فَرَّطْنَا فِي الْكِتَابِ مِن شَيْءٍ ۚ ثُمَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِمْ يُحْشَرُونَ And there is no creature on[or within]

Using of the Jinn

Dealing with the jinn is a serious issue, and is a door that leads to evil and mischief; Shirk only came to mankind through them. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, telling us how Allaah taught His slaves: ‘I have created all My slaves with the inclination to worship Me alone, but the devils come to them and turn them away from their religion. They forbid to them that which I have permitted to them, and they tell them to associate others with me for which I have not sent down any authority.’ Narrated by Muslim (2865).

There are believers and Muslims among the jinn, and also kaafirs and evildoers. But the fact that they are concealed from man means that we cannot be sure about any one of them, and gives us cause for concern about their tricks and treachery, especially with the spread of ignorance and bid’ah (innovation), which is the harbinger of shirk. Usually these creatures make man fall into that which is haraam, and bring only a little benefit.

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “And verily, there were men among mankind who took shelter with the males among the jinn, but they (jinn) increased them (mankind) in sin and transgression” [al-Jinn 72:6] Hence the fatwas of the scholars state that it is haram to deal with the jinn at all – whether with the believers or the kaafirs among them – and it is essential not to take this matter lightly, so as to close the door to fitnah and confusion, and out of concern for those who have faith in Allaah.

Jinn Presence and departure

Just as there are many different types of people, there are many types of jinn. Most people think when one is possessed by a jinni he/she must behave in a certain way; this is wrong and is a bad understanding of the reality of demonology. The influence of jinn on humans can be divided into a number of categories:

  • 1. Presence of waswasah It is an overpowering form of possession which is tiring and stressful for the patient, making them cry, laugh and become angry without any real explanation. This type of presence of the jinn could last for hours, days or for the whole lifespan of the patient causing anxiety, stress, depression and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). This is very stressful for both the patient and their family.
  • 2. Influence on the brain of the patient The jinni uses the brain to control the human senses, nervous system, muscles, and does not suffer too much from carrying the body of the patient. This may last for a few minutes, days or perhaps most of the person life. An example of this type of possession is ‘madness’.
  • 3. Influenceon the mind of the patient (without possession) This type of possession is the same as the previous one (influence on the brain of the patient), but without possessing the body or the nervous system.
  • 4. Influence on the patient’s body The jinni takes possession of one part of the patient’s body causing back pain, headache and may lead to loss of hearing or eyesight. This occurs whilst the patient is fully awake and may last for several days as the jinni can take possession of just one area of the body; as in the case of paralysis of the legs caused by jinn possession. It is more apparent when the person is receiving ruqyah or following the program.
  • 5. The dual presence In this type of case, if you wish to speak to the patient or to the jinni you can do so. It is a very confusing experience for the Raqi, even more confusing for family members who do not believe or are in denial of jinn possession.
  • 6. Full presence This type of possession is when a jinni takes full control of the person from head to toe.

Way to avoid harm from the Jinn

Saying the basmallah is vital for Muslims before engaging in any act which could potentially harm or kill the jinn – bismillah is like an order – they have been warned, and so if any harms befalls upon them, it is what their own hands have earned. If a person says bismillah before an act the jinn can hear it, and they will not ignore it. It is very important for a person to say bismillah before doing these things mentioned. It gives the jinn a chance to get away. Allah swt has given humans the authority to wander the earth by His permission, so when they say bismillah the jinn must obey the command. The bismillah acts as a barrier between the human and jinn.

Jinn possession

Jinn possession of a human is proven in the Qur’an and Sunnah, and by the consensus of Ahl al-Sunnah wa’l-Jamaa’ah and by the eyewitness. No one disputes this apart from the Mu’tazilah who give priority to their own rational analysis over the evidence of the Qur’aan and Sunnah. “Those who eat Ribaa will not stand (on the Day of Resurrection) except like the standing of a person beaten by Shaytaan (Satan) leading him to insanity. That is because they say: ‘Trading is only like Ribaa’…” [Al-Baqarah 2:275]

Al-Qurtubi said in his Tafseer (part 3, p. 355): “This ayah is proof that those people are wrong who deny that epilepsy is caused by the jinn and claim that its causes are only physical, and that the Shaytaan does not enter people or cause madness.” Ibn Katheer said in his Tafseer (part 1, p. 32), after mentioning the aayah quoted above: “They will not rise from their graves on the Day of Resurrection except like the way in which the epileptic rises during his seizure, when he is beaten by the Shaytaan. This is because they will rise in a very bad state. Ibn ‘Abbaas said: the one who consumes ribaa will rise on the Day of Resurrection crazy and choking.”

Ibn Taymiyah (Majmoo’ al-Fataawa, 42/276) said: “The fact that jinn can enter human bodies is proven by the consensus of Ahl al-Sunnah wa’l-Jamaa’ah. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): ‘those who eat Ribaa will not stand (on the Day of Resurrection) except like the standing of a person beaten by Shaytaan (Satan) leading him to insanity. That is because they say: ‘Trading is only like Ribaa’…’ [Al-Baqarah 2:275]. And in as-Saheeh it is narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: ‘The Shaytaan flows through the son of Adam as the blood flows through his veins.’”

‘Abd-Allaah ibn al-Imaam Ahmad ibn Hanbal said; “I said to my father, ‘There are some people who say that the jinn do not enter the body of the epileptic.’ He said: ‘O my son, they are lying; the jinn could speak through this person.’” Commenting on this, Ibn Qudaamah said: “What he said is well known, because a person may suffer an epileptic seizure and speak in a language that no one understands, and his body may be beaten with blows that would fell a camel, but the epileptic does not feel them at all, and he is also unaware of the words he is saying. The epileptic and others may be dragged about, or the carpet on which he is sitting may be pulled, and utensils may be moved about from place to place, and other things may happen. Anyone who witnesses such a thing will know for sure that the one who is speaking through the person and moving these things is not human.” And he said may Allaah have mercy on him: “There is no one among the imams of the Muslims who denies that jinn may enter the body of the epileptic and others. Anyone who denies that and claims that Islam denies it is lying about Islam. There is nothing in the proofs of sharee’ah to show that it does not happen.”

Types of possession

1. Regional possession (ta’ifa): i.e. “passing by, comes and goes (not permanent) Allah (SAW) mentions in the Qur’an about a regional touches by the devil in this verses

يقول الله تعالى في سورة الأعراف: } وَإِماّ يَنَزَغَنّكَ مِنَ الشّيْطَانِ نَزْغٌ فَاسْتَعِذْ بِاللّهِ إِنّهُ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ * إِنّ الّذِينَ اتّقَواْ إِذَا مَسّهُمْ طَائِفٌ مّنَالشّيْطَانِ تَذَكّرُواْ فَإِذَا هُم مّبْصِرُونَ{وقال تعالى في سورة قد أفلح المؤمنون :} ادْفَعْ بِالّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ السّيّئَةَ نَحْنُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا يَصِفُونَ * وَقُلْرّبّ أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِن ْ هَمَزَاتِ الشّياطِينِ * وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ رَبّ أَن يَحْضُرُون{وقال تعالى في سورة فصلت :} وَلاَ تَسْتَوِي الْحَسَنَةُ وَلاَ السّيّئَةُ ادْفَعْبِالّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ فَإِذَا الّذِي بَيْنَكَ وَبَيْنَهُ عَدَاوَةٌ كَأَنّهُ وَلِيّ حَمِيمٌ * وَمَا يُلَقّاهَا إِلاّ الّذِينَ صَبَرُواْ وَمَا يُلَقّاهَآ إِلاّ ذُو حَظّ عَظِيمٍ * وَإِمّا يَنزَغَنّكَمِنَ الشّيْطَانِ نَزْغٌ فَاسْتَعِذْ بِاللّهِ إِنّهُ & nbsp;هُوَ السّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ {

Ibn Kathir in his Tafseer says: Allaah tells us about His pious servants who obey him as He ordered and left what is forbidden and if thing was to befall them from the touch of shaytan, epilepsy, anger, sadness, regret of sin, thinking of doing a sin and then they turn back to Him. The scholars have said that all these understanding of the verses that were mentioned above, are possible.

Regional possession: i.e. “passing by Is a type of possession that occurs as a seizure in ones sleep when one can’t breathe, move or speak. It happens so quick it could be just seconds or minutes, in some cases if not all the jinn does this form outside, usually it is a flying type jinn.

2. Projectory possession (aarid) A true type of possession that is passing by which take possession of a person for a specific time for hours during the day or night then leaves the body and comes back the next day, week, month, year or perhaps leaves the body and does not come back at all. May Allah keep them out. From research some patient feel the departure of the jinn leaving the body in the form of a sensation resembling that of a sudden shaking or shiver of one of the legs, or a strong air leaving through the mouth….etc., especially when the jinn knows that he/she will be recited on, he/she leave the body.

3. Accompanying possession (ikthiraan) Is a true type of possession that the jinn permanently takes possession of one part of the body such as the leg, womb, spine or it can take possession of the whole body, day and night when asleep or awake, it becomes as if it is a part of the body.

4. External possession (khariji) External possession is a type of possession where the jinn accompanies the person full time or part time. It is mentioned in a hadith in sahih Muslim narrated by Huthayfah, that when they sat down with the prophet (PBUH) to eat they will wait until the prophet started, a young girl was approaching the food as if she was getting pushed from an unknown force, as she reached out for the food the prophet (PBUH) grabbed her hand, the same happened to a Bedouin Arab, he reached his hand to grab the food, the prophet (PBUH) grabbed his hand too. The prophet (PBUH) said that the shaytan make lawful for themselves food that has not been mentioned the name of Allah. The jinn has the ability to take form of a human being or animal, that can have a physical touch on a person, or he can sit on a person’s back, causing heaviness, tightness of the chest, whispering, anger, or comes to a person when he is asleep and presses on a point in the brain to cause seizure. The shaytan can take form of an insect or animal and moves around the person’s body and clothing, causing scratches, bruises or blows in his face to frighten the person so that he/she can’t go to sleep, the jinn can take form of a beautiful woman/man to have sexual relationships with.

5.Transitus possession (mu’tadi) This type of possession is where more than one person is afflicted simultaneously by a single jinn mostly from the same relation of the one who is suffering. For one reason or another this is why it is called transitus (Meaning: to pass over or cross through). It could be one or more jinn that can be accompanied with a group (family, gang, clan, slaves or prisoners) in this possession. It could be an external attack, that’s why a person can go to a raqi but to no affect, because the jinn is in the wife/ husband / mother / friend ect….

6.Imaginary possession (wahmi) “This type is of delusion is the most dangerous and the most common”: Imaginary epilepsy is the result of mixing with those who are possessed, then starting to imagine oneself is afflicted with the same symptoms, or the healer suggests to the patient that he/she is afflicted. Perhaps this one of the ways the shayateen take advantage from the situation by taking authority over the mind to make him think that it is a fact that he is possessed, when reading on him/her the person will fall, scream and shout as if it is a jinn. Imaginary possession is the worst type of illness. It starts of with an idea then it becomes a belief leading to actions, which is all an autosuggestion. There is no cure for this but for the opposite of the real possession, sihr and ayn witchcraft, Allah has given us the cure (Ruqya).

7. False pretense Some patient who go back and fourth to the Raqi, with their own agenda and goals by coming attending the sessions when reading on them occurs they scream and shout saying I am here for such and such siher, but really the patient is not possessed or afflicted in anyway by any member the world of the unseen. This is a very dangerous situation for the person who’s acting and lying, the jinn may see this as a mockery to their world, it is possible they will attack and cause harm. All of this is to seek attention from others, or to have an excuse for their bad actions.

Reasons for Jinn Possession A jinn will accompany or possess a human being for various reasons which are as follows:

  • Revenge
  • Indirect Revenge
  • One who turns away from the remembrance of Allah
  • Lust
  • Sihr
  • ‘Ayn (Evil Eye)
  • Zaar

The ways in which a human can cause harm to the jinn

When the jinn possess a human for revenge it usually due to one of the following reasons

  • i) Pouring boiling water: Boiling water can cause harm to the jinn or even kill them.
  • ii) Urinating in places where jinn reside: The jinn reside in places where human beings do not frequently visit, and tend to take control of these areas and make them their homes. I have personally seen this happen where a brother came to me, I read roqya for him, and the jinn had explained that he had taken control of this person because of his actions in a park.
  • iii) Harming animals that have jinn in them: Jinn can take the form of animals/Jinn can live in animals, particularly black animals, and so if a person harms an animal, particularly at night, these can be jinn and they can harm you back. Avoid black cats and dogs, “…There are in Medina jinns who have accepted Islam, so when you see any one of them, pronounce a warning to it for three days, and if they appear before you after that, then kill it for that is a devil.” (Book #026, Hadith #5557)
  • iv)Shouting out loud, wailing, singing or reciting Qur’an in the toilet: This is something I have had experience with. A brother who came to me for roqya had been speaking to himself in the toilet. Slowly he went into conversation with the Shayateen, saying he was stronger than them, and that they couldn’t do anything to him. The Jinn possessed him, and he was to blame, because he was the one who told the jinn to present themselves.
  • v) Jumping from a high place without saying bismillah: If a person says bismillah before an act, the jinn can hear it, and they will not ignore it.
  • vii) Throwing stones or objects in the wilderness without saying bismillah: If a person throws something it can hit and can harm the jinn.

Symptoms of Jinn possession – Magic

Symptoms of Jinn possession – Magic These symptoms have been divided into three categories:

  • 1. Those which occur when one is awake, and Symptoms when one is awake:
    • 1 – Turning away, in particular, from acts of worship and obedience, the remembrance of Allah (swt) (Dhikr) and reading the Qur’an. Allah (swt) says: And whosoever turns away blindly from the remembrance of the Most Gracious (Allah (swt) (i.e. this Qur’an and worship of Allah (swt), we appoint for him Shaytaan to be a Qarin (a companion) to him. And verily, they (Shayateen) hinder them from the path (of Allah (swt) but they think that they are guided aright – (Al-Zukhruf 43:36-37)
    • 2 – Erratic behaviour in one’s words, deeds and movements. Allah (swt) says: (Those who eat Riba will not stand (on the Day of Resurrection) except like the standing of a person beaten by Shaytaan leading him to insanity.) (Al-Baqarah 2:275)
    • 3 – Seizures (with no medical cause); there are signs to indicate that a seizure has devilish causes.
    • 4 – Paralysis of a limb (with no medical cause).
    • 5 – Being quick to get angry or weep with no apparent cause.
    • 6 – Sitting in the toilet for a long time, and talking to oneself.
    • 7 – Constant headache with no medical cause, which is not eased by painkillers.
    • 8 – Irregular menstruation in women.
    • 9 – Not producing children although both husband and wife are medically sound and able to reproduce.
    • 10. Depression. – Depression refers to intense sadness. It is a widespread mental illness, indeed one of the most widespread. As for mild sadness or feeling “blue”, this is a normal and natural emotion which hardly anyone can escape, not even a believer. Allah (swt) says: Secret counsels (conspiracies) are only from Shaytaan, in order that he may cause grief to the believers. – (Al-Mujaddilah 58:10) If that sadness increases and takes over a person, it becomes depression.
  • Signs of depression:
    • Feeling distressed and sad
    • Loss of appetite
    • Lack of focus, forgetfulness
    • Sleep disturbances, weight loss
    • Lack of sexual desire
    • There are other signs when one is awake, but they may be caused by other life circumstances, such as not succeeding in efforts to get married, repeatedly failing to do so etc.
  • 2. Those which occur when one is asleep
    • Symptoms when one is asleep:
      • 1 – Frightening nightmares, which includes seeing various kinds of creatures such as ghosts or apparitions, seeing oneself falling from a high place, seeing people in strange forms, and snakes. A man may see awoman who wants him to have intercourse with her (and vice versa) constantly in his dreams, or he may see someone threatening him.
      • 2 – Insomnia, anxiety and fear upon waking.
      • 3 – Talking loudly in one’s sleep, or moaning and groaning. Note: A person should not be regarded as being possessed by Jinn if any of these symptoms occur. No one can be certain that a person has been possessed by Jinn until after the Qur’an has been recited over them, so these symptoms should not be taken as definitive evidence of Jinn possession.
  • 3. Sudden behavioural changes that one may experience that are out of character.
    • 3. Sudden behavioural change
    • Signs of sudden behavioural change that has to do with a person’s inward attitude. The below is a general guidline for all Muslims. However for practising Muslims who did not have these qualities before but find a sudden strange inclination to them, should get themselves checked with Ruqyah as soon as possible.
      • Associating others with Allah (swt) (Shirk) – Minor Shirk (showing off)
      • Being angry with the divine decree (like saying ‘why has this happened to me?’ etc)
      • Forgetting Allah (swt) and the Hereafter
      • Feeling safe from the plot of Shaytaan and getting carried away in sin and relying on Allah (swt) ‘s mercy
      • Despairing of the mercy of Allah (swt)
      • Thinking badly of Allah (swt)
      • Deliberately telling lies about Allah (swt) and the Messenger of Allah (swt)
      • Arrogance, self-admiration and showing off
      • Loving to be praised for doing acts of worship
      • Deceit, Hypocrisy, Greed, Stinginess
      • Hidden anger, grudges and envy
      • Turning away from people out of arrogance and scorning them
      • Looking at the rich and venerating them because of their richness
      • Fear of poverty
      • Mocking the poor because of their poverty
      • Competing in worldly gains
      • Loving to be praised for what one has not done
      • Being preoccupied with the faults of others whilst ignoring one’s own faults
      • Strong feelings for religions other than the religion of Allah (swt)
      • Mocking the slaves of Allah (swt) , looking down on them and despising them
      • Thinking badly of Muslims
      • Not accepting the truth because it goes against one’s own whims and desires, or hating those who speak the truth
      • Rejoicing in sin and Persisting in sin
      • Acquiring knowledge for worldly gain (showing off)
      • Offending the close friends of Allah (swt) and taking them as enemies
      • Showing evil behaviour and foul language so as to make people fear you and avoid your evil woman who wants him to have intercourse with her (and vice versa) constantly in his dreams, or he may see someone threatening him.
      • Insomnia, anxiety and fear upon waking.
      • Talking loudly in one’s sleep, or moaning and groaning. Note: A person should not be regarded as being possessed by Jinn if any of these symptoms occur. No one can be certain that a person has been possessed by Jinn until after the Qur’an has been recited over them, so these symptoms should not be taken as definitive evidence of Jinn possession.

Symptoms of Jinn Possession

Verily symptoms of jinn possession and the signs changes from one person to another. sometimes the signs very clear and no doubt it is from shayateen (devils)

Difficulty identifying symptoms

Most of the time the symptoms and the signs are very difficult for the one who is possessed to identify that he/she is such let alone those around him/her (i.e family and friends) particularly friends who have not known the individual prior to his/hers possession for example: a person has been possessed for ten years and he has a friend who he has known for five years clearly the person who is possessed has undergone a change in his character during that period of time, the friend who has only known him for five years would in no way see that because they became friends after that character alteration.

Some people would suffer from possession but they would not have the knowledge that they are possessed and this is from the symptoms of being possessed by a jinn for example a person might have have a persistent medically unexplained migraine but they would not know that it is a sign of jinn possession the individual would relate that migraine to everything else but to jinn possession. Other examples of what we have just mentioned include being sad for no reason, severe wiswasa ( whispering thoughts) not wanting to be in the house, an unusual love of solitude and dislike of being in the company of people, sleeplessness or insomnia and constantly being agitated.

Some possession can also be confused with other factual afflictions mentioned in the Quran and the sunnah primarily the eye (or what is generally called the evil eye in English) because one doesn’t necessarily have to be possessed to be afflicted with the eye you can be afflicted with the eye alone without the presence of a jinn attached to it, the same maybe said for sihrr (Magic) attachment to a jinn doesn’t always come when being afflicted with shirr. Being afflicted with the eye alone can make a man collapse to the ground without being possessed by a jinn the same maybe said for shirr affliction which can also render and human incapable of mobility without being possessed by a jinn which is the most common cause in respect of medically unexplained relevant conditions but that is a subject we will discuss another time as the subject of focus is jinn possession and its types.

Jinn possession can also be mistaken for a physical illness for the two have many striking similarities in appearance. We can also say the same for physiological and nerve disorders as jinn possession also bare striking resemblances to these two conditions a kind of camouflage on the part of the jinn if you will, which is the art of concealing something foreign in a natural environment undetectable by visual and conventional means and exposed only to the trained eye and by using specialised means in this case namely the Quran which also eliminates mistakes being made in the opposite direction.

Treatment for jinn possession doesn’t necessarily coincide comply with standard medical procedures treatment when it does work it only does so because the jinn would by playing a trick for example; we have mentioned that a persistant and unexplained migraine is a symptom of jinn possession. Person who is unaware that he/she is possessed and unaware of the symptoms would treat the persistant migraine with conventional medicines such as paracetamol the jinn within would then inturn cease in inflicting the migraine like pain once the paracetamol is taken only to carry on some hours later the reason being so that the individual its possessing can carry on taking the convential medicine in order for him/her to become reliant on it and think it’s nothing but a minor ailment which can be treated by such conventional medicines this being so that it would not occur to the individual that it is anything but that and the possibility of a jinn being the cause of this would not cross his or her mind. This is standard practice for a jinn to conceal itself in a human host make it appear as though it’s something else. A diversionary tactic if you will. this is a big statement to make in logical terms but if one were to look carefully and investigate you will find many serious examples of such, like a cancerous lump appearing in the womb of a woman who would intern have her womb removed because of the threat of terminal illness only for the lump to reappear some time later in the very same place of which medical professionals would have no explanation. This has been proven to be a trait of the jinn to cause such diversions this is not to say that all jinn have such ability to cause such tumours but some jinn do and can cause cancer.

If you recall the examples we have given from the other articles that we have mentioned if a jinn that is obsessed with a married woman and does not want her to bare any children with her husband it can cause corruption within her reproductive organs to stop conception by either squeezing the fallopian tubes or blocking the cervix to prevent sperm entering or by even attacking the male sperm and killing them or even causing a miscarriage if conception actually succeeds all these are actual signs of jinn possession.
